Assagay Conservancy

The Assagay Conservancy was formed by a group of residents concerned about the proliferation of invasive alien plants in the valley. The Conservancy area covers the 282 Ha of the Assagay Valley and constitutes the Madwala Reserve and the Umhlatazana River catchment habitats, predominantly temperate grassland, but also undisturbed areas of riverine forest and sensitive wetlands. Assagay contains tracts of ecologically sensitive land and experts have identified rare species of wild flower. Assagay is also important in that it has the source of the Umhlatazana River.

As the pressures of urban encroachment continue to increase, it becomes more important for us to focus our energy on the sustainable utilisation and effective management of our area, to ensure it is conserved for present and future generations to enjoy.

While community members remain divided on various issues, the Conservancy remains resolute in its goal to see all residents involved in this effort to protect our valley. Success is only possible through the co-operation and active participation of all the residents in their various capacities, with the support of the Conservancy.

The purpose of the Conservancy is to raise community awareness and enthusiasm through the dispersal of information and various education initiatives. We aim to restore and sustain a healthy environment, in which indigenous plants, mammals, birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, and our sensitive wetlands, are able to thrive and residents are encouraged to live in ecologically sustainable ways, for the benefit of the whole community.

The cooperation and joint participation of all residents is a priority if the integrity of our valley and the conservation of its diverse habitats and wildlife are to be preserved, which is the ultimate goal of the Assagay Conservancy.
