More about APD Nelson Mandela Bay

Established in 1940, The Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities, Nelson Mandela Bay, is a non-profit organisation located at 55 Paterson Road, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

At our premises in Paterson Road, we provide income-generating opportunities to 120 people with disabilities in our Job Creation Centres.

Our Job Creation Centres provide income-generating opportunities for persons with disabilities that assist them financially and allow them to attain their maximum level of independence.

Our 2 specially adapted busses provide transport for our mobility-impaired people. Our more mobile people receive a subsidy to allow them to use public transport. We also provide a basic daily meal at the Centres and two healthy, balanced meals to the children at our Ability Day Care Centre for Children with Disabilities.

The Ability Day Care Centre for Children with Disabilities was established in 2006. Our premises on the edge of Motherwell in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, provides for 30 children between the ages of 1-7 years. The centre is professionally managed by one of our senior social workers with the assistance of seven caregivers who are responsible for the daily therapy and stimulation programmes.

Our mission is to change lives which we do by:
- Creating income-generating work opportunities in our Job Creation Centres
- Caring for and providing daily physical and mental stimulation programmes for 30 profoundly disabled children at our Ability Day Care Centre for Children with Disabilities
- Our social work team provides social services (e.g. home visits, assisting with grant applications, etc.) to the disabled community we serve
- Involving ourselves with various community upliftment projects
- Our Recruitment Department places suitably qualified applicants with disabilities in the open-labour market
- Advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities by: Speaking on behalf of the disability sector in public and private arenas; conducting accessibility assessments of facilities and services; and facilitating disability sensitisation training programmes
- Inspiring change by sharing the stories of the people we serve
